Vitoria Overview |
| Southwest of the southern border of France lies the Basque Country, which is made up of three provinces. The Basque Country has a distinctive national and cultural entity within Spain, including its own language. Vitoria is the Basque capital and is situated in the province of Alava, The city is famous for its Old Quarter, which is a fascinating place, full of lovely, medieval stone buildings with beautiful wooden balconies, which seem to be hanging precariously off them. The city is home to two cathedrals, one that was completed in the 15th century and another, which has yet to be finished.

The Plaza de Espana - Square Vitoria. This is a neo-classical, arcaded square, which has the usual, rather austere, elegance of 19th-century Spanish squares.
Plaza de la Virgen Blanca – Located in the southwest corner of old Vitoria, The plaza is circled by elegant noble houses and is home to a monument in the centre, which commemorates the defeat of the Duke of Wellington by Napoleon's army in Vitoria in 1813.
